Big Sandy Cabin

One of Eric's favorite places to go is to a cabin that has been passed down through the generations of his Dad's side of the family and has been enjoyed by many. A piece of land was bought back in the 1930's by his Great-Grandfather and his family. They built a small 2 bedroom (I think originally it was 1 bedroom) cabin with a boathouse that sleeps up to 7 people on what used to be an island on Big Sandy Lake, near MacGregor. The cabin is situated on a peninsula, which of course means that there is water on three sides. So, we have to keep an eye on the kids at all times and usually require they have their life jackets on most of the time. There have been rumors of Big Foot being spotted up in that neck of the woods, specifically in the cabins driveway. As well as many years ago some residents  from the state prison had escaped and they had a manhunt in that area since it was believed that is where they were hiding (I believe that one was a true story, however they were eventually caught). Bears have been spotted and it is a historical sight since there was a famous Indian War there years ago that you can still dig up arrowheads from. There is no running water and yes that means no bathroom and no shower! There is an outhouse and of course, the lake if you really want to get clean. There are leaches, and we had plenty of  to pull off this last visit. There are campfires and a wood stove inside to keep warm on cool days and nights, there is creativity and reading. There are walks around the island, and boat rides in a speed boat and the old turtle boat; both of which died while we were up there this last time. But overall it is a peaceful, quiet place to get away from so many demands of everyday life....where you are actually able to hear your own thoughts.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy up there like turtle hunting, which we accomplished when Jordan snagged a little turtle in the net and brought it back for the little ones to play with.
There is canoeing: which we did a lot of last week.
There is the rope swing that the kids loved as well as the ever famous "dock-wars". Everone tries to sneak up on Eric and then he takes the liberty to throw as many in as he can, even at the cost of having the women of the house mad at him.

Overall Eric finds it peaceful and relaxing and has very good memories from the cabin, well that is, he did. Now going up there with 6 kiddos adds a little extra "flavor". Last week we were able to make plenty of memories through 3 fun days at the little cabin on Big Sandy Lake. Here are some more memories from last week through Jordan's great picture taking!

Happy Father's Day everyone, we hope you had a great day! We will enjoy a ribs and chicken dinner in honor of Eric!
